From 22-24 July 2017, the BecA-ILRI Hub co-convened the Durable Rice Blast Resistance for Africa annual project and stakeholders meetings in Arusha, Tanzania. The meeting was convened in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (MALF) the United Republic of Tanzania, the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) and Exeter University.

The meeting marked the culmination of 4 years of research funded by a BBSRC Sustainable Crop Production for International Development Grant, with funding provided by BBSRC, the Department for International Development (DFID), and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The overal objective of the project was to gain a thorough understanding of the phenotypic and genotypic diversity of the regional rice blast pathogen population in order to guide introgression of multiple sources of resistance into New Rice for Africa (NERICA) rice lines and other high performance rice cultivars using marker assisted breeding. To achieve the goal, the project used a combination of next generation DNA sequencing and genome wide association studies to carry out genotypic and phenotypic diversity studies of the rice blast pathogen, Magnaporthe oryzae, in Africa.
